1. California
For the big waves take a trip to California where you`ll find excellent spots to get yourself seen amongst the some of the best surfers from around the world. For the biggest and best try Steamer Lane, a top class surfing spot.
2. Portugal
Europe`s finest waves can be found at Portugal`s doorstep, where the first surfing competition took place in 1977. The fishing town venue, Ericeira is in easy reach of Lisbon and is now well known for it`s surfing community. Test your skill on the surf at São Lorenzo and Coxos.
3. Barbados
Venture further afield with a trip to Barbados where the warm crystal clear waters make even the beginners surf an enjoyable experience. Don`t be fooled by the sparse crowds, top UK surfers such as Russell Winter, Sam Lamiroy and Sam Bleakley often visit and take to the waves here.
4. Hawaii
For further exotic locations, try the seven-mile stretch of waves along the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii. Between Ka`ena and Kahuku Point you`ll find the Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay, all of which offer varied breaks and new challenges.
5. Bali
With it`s rich and diverse culture, wildlife and its vivid coral reefs Bali will satisfy the traveler in every surfer. At the famed surf spots such as Dreamland, Uluwatu and Padang Padang, waves can reach up to 12ft any where from April to November.
6.South Africa
South Africa offers something different for the more experienced surfer. Located in the Eastern Cape area, southwest of Port Elizabeth, Jeffrey`s Bay provides both blue flag beaches and a right-hand point break that will tempt and test the keen surfer. Divided into sections this surfing spot requires a diverse range of skills.
7.Gold Coast, Australia
Unsurprisingly Australia`s fine beaches sport some of the best waves you`ll find and the Gold Coast is no exception. However with The Spit, Main Beach, Mermaid beach, Narrowneck and Palm Beach you`ll need a fair bit of time to fully experience and enjoy all that The Gold Coast has to offer.
8. Mentawai Islands, Indonesia
The Mentawai Islands provide another exciting surf destination. Although access to the islands is by sea using ferries and charter boats they are well worth a visit with the biggest waves caught between June and September. However even in offshore conditions you`ll find waves to ride with variable winds creating waves in every possible direction.
9. Samoa
Just next door to Fiji and displaying some of the best surf available, The Samoan Islands in the South Pacific Ocean provide our number nine top surfing destination. Offering warm waters and quality waves Samoa is the place to be to hunt down some infamous surfing locations such as A`ufaga Village, Tiavea, Laulii, Falea`puna, Boulders and Coconuts.
10. Costa Rica
Lastly and not least, Costa Rica, in Central America concludes this countdown. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica makes for a serious surf location. Crowded it might well be, but every second will be worth it when you feel at your best catching that perfect wave in your Animal surf clothing.
